For Lingering Back Pain, Spinal Decompression Therapy May be Solution

Posted on 2012-04-25 15:35:56

Dunwoody chiropractor implements spinal decompression.jpgBack pain can sometimes be treated with chiropractic adjustments or other methods, but other times it seems the pain simply will not go away. This is where spinal decompression therapy may provide an effective solution. Back 2 Back Chiropractic offers spinal decompression as one of our all-natural, non-invasive treatments that provide relief and contribute to overall wellness. Our chiropractors Dr. David McKenna and Dr. O’Hara McKenna have used decompression to treat pain that does not respond to other treatments as well as an alternative to surgery.

Decompression for Pain Relief and Pain Management

Decompression can work for pain relief and pain management in situations where the pain is being caused by excess pressure on the spinal column. It can relieve back and neck pain, pain, tingling and weakness due to sciatica, treat spinal nerve roots that have been injured or damaged, and restore bulging discs. Decompression can also help manage pain caused by chronic conditions, such as degenerative disc disease and posterior facet syndrome.

Unlike a spinal adjustment that realigns vertebrae that have strayed from the vertical alignment, decompression instead gently stretches and elongates the spinal column. The procedure serves to remove pressure on the discs between the vertebrae, which can eventually cause the discs to be restored to their proper positioning. While the patient lies on our decompression table (which is attached to a computer), the computer is set to pull and pump the discs. Based on our chiropractor's diagnostics, the appropriate settings will be implemented.

In our office, we use the Chattanooga DTS 900 decompression table, which is one of the only tables that allows the doctor to angle the "pull" in any combination of movements versus only being limited to pull on one plane. This means if a disc is compressed on one side, we can angle the table accordingly to give a true axial decompression on that disc. Included in our decompression sessions, we provide our patients with ultrasound and cold laser therapy to help discs and surrounding tissue to heal faster.

Decompression can be supplemented by other methods to create a comprehensive treatment plan. When combined with massage therapy, for instance, the benefits of decompression can be further enhanced by improving circulation and alleviating tension from the affected area. If you have questions about the procedure, contact the office and we'd be happy to schedule you for a consultation.

Why Headaches Are a Pain

Posted on 2012-04-13 11:01:49

pain management for headaches from Dunwoody chiropractor.jpgNearly everyone suffers from a headache at some point in life, although some people get them more than others. There are many reasons why headaches occur, as well as conditions and injuries that make certain people more prone to them than others.

Muscle Tension - Muscles that are tense can cause a person to have a tension headache, which often causes pain or soreness near the front of the head, the temples and down around to the base of the head and neck.

Personal Injury - An injury in the spine or neck may be the underlying cause of a recurring headache. The vertebrae and discs in the spine are surrounded by many nerve pathways that can cause back pain, neck pain, a recurring headache and other discomfort throughout the body when under pressure.

Environmental Triggers - Certain environmental triggers may be responsible for some migraines. Those triggers may include food allergies or allergens in the air, such as foods containing monosodium glutamate or fragrances.

Pain Management Solutions

Fortunately, there is help available for headache sufferers, and it does not include simply taking pain medication to cope with headache symptoms. Here at Back 2 Back Chiropractic, we believe that pain management should address the source of a headache victim's pain, rather than simply cover up the symptoms. Each Dunwoody chiropractor in our office is trained and experienced in identifying the underlying causes of headache pain, and we customize a headache treatment plan for each patient.

For example, if you are suffering from an occasional tension headache, we will offer lifestyle advice for managing your stress, and we may also recommend massage therapy treatments to help release muscle tension. If the pain is the result of a personal injury, such as a herniated disc, we may use spinal decompression or manual manipulation of the spine to help the body heal. Still further, if you report migraine symptoms, we will help you identify the environmental factors that may be triggering headache pain.

Pregnancy Chiropractor

Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Research shows that women who receive prenatal chiropractic care can reduce the time of their labor by 5-9 hours on average. That’s a tremendous amount of time when you are in labor! If your new to chiropractic then you probably have quite a lot of questions about the safety of chiropractic care during pregnancy and this article will answer some of the most commonly asked iStock_000004583681Small.jpgquestions. Why would I need a chiropractor during pregnancy? Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy can help align the pelvis to allow the baby to get in the best position possible for birth.  This results in less discomfort, and easier labor and delivery, and a better transition for the baby into this world.  Muscle strains of pregnancy are very real and can be quite painful.  The average weight gain of 25 – 35 pounds can attribute to this severe discomfort, and as the baby grows, the woman’s weight is projected far in front of her body placing extra stress on the low back.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Absolutely!  It is not only safe, but highly beneficial to both mom and baby.  Chiropractors certified in prenatal care will have special tables to accommodate a woman’s pregnant belly allowing the unborn baby and mother to be comfortable.

I have low back pain/ sciatica, can chiropractic help me?

Yes!  Studies show that 84% of patients receiving spinal adjustments reported relief of back pain during pregnancy.  The increase in weight can create spinal misalignments and postural distortions, incidentally affecting mobility, nerves and muscles.  The curves of the spine become exaggerated causing back pain.  This is exaggerated during late pregnancy when the baby’s head presses down and can irritate mom’s sciatic nerve.  This can cause pins and needles or sharp pain traveling down the back of your leg making it hard to walk.  Chiropractic adjustments specifically tailored to correct these imbalances lead to greater comfort in the pregnant woman.

My baby is breech.  Can chiropractic help?

Breech presentation means the baby’s feet or rear end are facing down.  Most ob-gyns will require cesarean section to deliver breech presentation.  Misalignment or lack in movement of the bones of the mother’s pelvis, a condition known as intra-uterine constraint, results in the baby’s inability to attain proper birth positioning which then leads to breech presentation.  The Webster-technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment for pregnant mothers.  This technique reduces interference to the nervous system, balances out pelvis muscles and ligaments which removes constraint to the woman’s uterus, and allows the baby to get in the best position for birth (head down).  Webster-technique has a 94% success rate at providing enough space in the mother’s womb for the baby to position itself head-down on its own.  This eliminates the necessity for all invasive delivery procedures concerning breech presentation.

What does the nervous system have to do with it?

Your nervous system controls and coordinates everything in your body.  Any nervous system interference can cause decrease in optimal health and function.  With pregnancy comes changes in posture and increased stress on the spine which can cause misalignments of the vertebra and interfere with the nervous system.  Pregnant mothers who have healthy spines in turn have a healthy nervous system, easier labors and deliveries, and healthier babies.

Can chiropractic care help with the labor and delivery?

I am sure you’ve heard some mother say that they were told their baby was too big or their pelvis was too small.  Truth is, it’s difficult and rare for you to make a baby too big for your pelvis.  Even if the baby is head down, intra-uterine constraint can restrict the baby’s head from moving down into the ideal position for delivery.  This can slow down labor, present risks for the baby, and add considerable pain to the mother.  A doctor who specializes and is certified in pregnancy chiropractic will have a firm understanding of the unique concerns presented in pregnancy.  In addition to adjusting the pregnant woman, these doctors will also recommend nutrition and exercise to help you have a more healthy and pleasant pregnancy.
